50 Elm Avenue - ROSEDALE
Absolutely Sumptuous!
That is how the agent describes this $4,995,000 mansion in Rosedale.
I was going to post this house yesterday but was waiting to find out why the agent had it listed on his website as 'SOLD' at $3,750,000.
In the meantime, Toronto Life posted this as their Home of the Week. Who knew they would post a listing that was only 24 hours old!?!
I am still trying to find out the story behind the 2 prices. Did the agent just sell this a few years ago? Did he list it a few years ago and it didn't sell so he jacked up the price?
I will update you when I know.
In the meantime...
This is a 120 plus year house that has been beautifully restored.
Unfortunately, the furniture is from the owner's grandmothers house. And just because the house is old doesn't mean the furniture needs to be too. Or that any of the original architecture needs to go....
Each individual piece of furniture is nice, but when you throw it all together, with those massive valances in each room (valances may be making a comeback but in a much smaller scale) ....it's just too much. That Living Room is TOO much. Guess I don't like Baroque.
But this house is a little outrageous. With the right furniture, it could be incredible.
Some might even say, "Absolutely SUMPtuous"!
Except for me.
And Alexa.
I think we both call it 'a little too much' (hello curtains in the family room, and in the den, I am grossed out by that bed....the kleenex box isn't helping...).
UPDATE: no word yet on the 'SOLD' price that disappeared from the site but an agent sent me a photo (thanks!) of the house when it was listed back in 1996....
for $929,000.
It sold for $810,000. Guess that is when it was a rooming house.
It kind of reminds me of all those abandoned houses just on the other side of the Sherbourne bridge (but bigger).

Even though the current owner's of 50 Elm Avenue filled the house with their grandmother's furniture, you have to applaud the restorers for restoring and not tearing this place down.
