2000 Strathallan Woods Place - BARRIE
Known as the 'T' house because of its architecture, this 4 bedroom, 3 bath, 3,660 square foot cottage is perfect for the modernist and cottage lover. Inspired by the LA based The Stahl House and designed by Toronto based architect Harry Bernard Kohl, this home was the winner of the 1968 Award for Most Beautiful Hidden Modernist Home.
Though famous for its architecture, it lay empty for almost a decade, from 2000 to 2007 when current owners bought and renovated the home as close to the original as possible.
The decor is also true to the time period for the most part. The dining room is decorated with the left behind Nienkämper dining set; discontinued Welsh Ruabon floor tiles were shipped up from the United States; a knock of Eames lounger was placed in the living room; and a replica sculpture was placed in the front yard. Though
I don't really understand the kitchen in that house. Or the grass dock. Is that a Lake Simcoe thing?
All in all, the couple has done a terrific job in the restoration.
With its location only an hour away from downtown Toronto, this home/cottage could be purchased as a year round home for a Toronto commuter as well as used as a cottage get away.
With a price tag of $2,249,00 and potential changes that need to be made, it seems a little steep but with that price, you will be the owner of a very unique home that would be a commuters dream or a cottage for those who aren't really into the whole 'cottage' experience.
And thanks to the agent for having such terrific photos and a great virtual tour! This is what all on-line listings should look like!!
