Home Designed by Eaton Centre Architect is for Sale in Peterborough (5 Comments)

I always love when a mid-century modern home has been kept as close to their original state as possible. And this house is probably as close as it gets with only a few necessary changes.

It is a home that was designed by well-known architect, Eberhard Zeidler, the man behind the Eaton Centre, Ontario Place, the Hamilton University Health Science Centre just to name a few.

Zeidler grew up in Germany and lived there until he moved to Peterborough in 1951 at 25 years old. Three years after starting at what I understand is now his firm, he designed this house which was only one of about 20 houses that he has designed.

And the second I saw his photo…

I recognized him and realized that he was the architect behind one of the houses that was part of inspiring me to start this website.

It was the house at 11 Beaumont Road located half way down a hill in the Rosedale ravine…

And it was Zeidler’s own family home from 1969 until the time that it sold in 2010.

Here are Eb and Jane Zeidler with their children last year being recognized for their generosity to the University of Toronto…

When it was first listed in 2009, it was the start of the many articles written about Zeidler, his family, and the house. Some can be found here, here, here, and when it was Toronto Life House of the Week in 2010 (which is around when I saw Eb and Jane in a store and they seemed to be as nice as they look).

They have since moved into a condo and Eb just celebrated his 94th birthday 2 weeks ago.

Almost 70 years after moving to Canada, I can’t imagine how it must feel for him to see that one of his original designs is still in tact with the current owners appreciating the architecture and the era when this home was built.

According to an article in MidCenturyHome.com, this house is owned by visual artist Jasmine Hum who painted all the bunny prints throughout the house like this one in the living room…

And Sonny Keyes, a sound mixer who used to be in the band, The Kings…

In the article, Keyes said…

‘We feel we are custodians of the house, and as long as it’s within our power to keep it as original as we can, we will do so. If we ever had to sell, we could only sell to another midcentury modern aficionado.’

I am not sure what prices are like these days in Peterborough or how many midcentury modern aficionados there are looking to live in Peterborough…

But I do know this is a good neighbourhood that is a fairly short walk to restaurants and as Keyes said…

This house ‘is a unicorn'.

The asking price for this 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house on a 60 x 100 foot lot at 714 Walkerfield Avenue is…

$529,900.

P.S. Where did the paint go on the fence…
